Review: Mad Max by TheMann

As the water turns to sand and the metal turns to rust, a waste lander flies across the desert in a black 1973 Ford Falcon. It is none other than Max Rockatansky. During his search for the Plains of Silence, he is chased by a War Party of War Boys loyal to Scabrous Scrotus. Max, retaliates by ambushing the chasers however, throughout his search for fuel among the burning scrap and corpses. Max is ambushed again, this time by Scabrous Scrotus himself. The titan in charge of Gas Town. Max is stripped of all his possessions. The iconic black jacket, the shotgun and the V8 Interceptor. Before the convoy depart with Max’s belongings, Max manages to wake up just in time to jump aboard the main vehicle carrying Scabrous Scrotus and reaches the top where the titan and his pet war dog await. The war dog attacks Max but is quickly punched away. Scabrous Scrotus sees this as a sign of weakness and attacks the dog. After this, Max and Scrotus battle to which blood is spilled in a gruesome tackle which results in the supposed death of Scabrous Scrotus. Before this however, Max is thrown off the vehicle by Scrotus and thus the game begins.

Mad Max is an Open World game based in the apocalypse world where everyone is reduced to one instinct – Survive. Max, as the main character, is forced to rely on the assistance of a “black finger” engineer known as Chumbucket who says he can assist Max in creating a vehicle stronger, faster and better than the V8 Interceptor. This is the general plot of the game, Max is tasked with assisting Chumbucket make a vehicle know to him as the Magnum Opus. This requires max to collect scrap which can only be collected through attacking Scrotus Camps and Savaging. Chumbucket builds Max a makeshift car however; it is not enough. Max requires a V8 in order to cross the plains of silence. The only place to gain such an engine is in Gas Town itself. Max needs to confront Gas Town to gain the engine he needs. The car at this point is far from ready. Max will need to survive and scavenge before he can take on Gas Town.

From my 50+ hours of experiencing Mad Max, I have found it to be a quite an enjoyable game. The main story line for Mad Max is gripping and very enjoyable with a lot of detail in the environment, large hordes of war boys to kill as well as the occasional scrap to scavenge and upgrade unlocked. With reference to upgrades. Mad Max has a large collection weapon and decal upgrades such as V8 engines, Armor, Ramming Grills, Harpoon Upgrades and hood ornament upgrades.
Make your vehicle fit your style with the large amounts of upgrades and customization options,
There are also many upgrades to Max himself to improve his ability to survive and deal punishment in combat. The world in which Mad Max is based is huge with the map itself consisting of five huge territories. Within each territory, there are a large number of activities such as Scavenger spots to gain Scrap, Minefields to clear for safety and ammo and Legendary Encounters to gain tasks and Intel. You will certainly have a lot to do which is great for a game in which on the surface appears to be simply collecting scrap and building a car. All these options allow for you to perform other tasks thus keeping the game interesting as well as improving skills to help you progress.
Max shows his enemies no mercy should they choose to pick a fight with him.
Storms are another occurrences in the Mad Max environment. They spawn randomly and in the process can cause a lot of mayhem. Similar to those in the movie. The scale of madness in which a storm can produce varies. They can be quite tame merely throwing a few pieces of scrap at you or they can be devastating by assaulting your car with large and fast attacking lightning bolts. Alternatively, you can be picked up and thrown into the air like a test dummy. If you are brave enough, you can take on the storms in your car and collect mega scrap boxes. These boxes are very valuable with each one containing 100 pieces of scrap. Each storm has an average of three boxes which you can collect with your harpoon, drag to a face location and collect the contents.
Storms are terrifying, though you may be rewarded if you choose to brave them.

Here are some of my tips for others playing the game based on the large amounts of time I have spent racing around the wasteland:
  1.  DO NOT RUSH THE GAME: You can start missions whenever you like however, some missions are really hard. Hard to the point where some upgrades would be helpful for example, as you progress throughout the game, enemies become stronger and more formidable as well as camps becoming more fortified.Alongside Story Missions, I highly suggest you do side quests and take out camps. This way you will gain the required materials needed to keep your car and Max on par with any challenge.
  2. UPGRADE CAMPS: As you progress through the game, you will meet the leaders of each territory who each have a stronghold. Each stronghold has many benefits including maggot farms to fill up health, Oil Storage for petrol and ammunition dumps for re-supply . Parts for each upgrade can be found within camps and scavenger locations.
  3. GET GRIFFA POINTS AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN: Griffa points allow Max to improve in skills and abilities. Griffa points are earned through achievements, race victories and legendary encounters. These can be used to upgrade skills such as increased health.  The skills are very useful and should be improved upon at every opportunity.
  4.  CONSERVE AMMO: Throughout your journey, you will encounter war parties attempting to kill you and war criers who can enhance the fighting ability of war boys. These enemies will most likely require a few rounds to put to down. I would highly suggest that you save your ammunition for these rather than shoot every enemy in sight. Furthermore, bullets are also extremely useful for taking out Top Dogs.

Overall, Mad Max is a very fun game to play if you are a fan of large open worlds to explore with a taste for blood and action as you venture into camps to kill Scrotus Scum and scavenge scrap. There are lots of missions to do, Lots of upgrades to unlock and of course; lots of screenshots to take of cool looking car creations. All the possibilities available to players makes this game a very enjoyable experience providing a large amount of replay value. To conclude this review of Mad Max, I would highly suggest this game to anyone looking for a fun adventure filled game and to top it all off, you can drive the vehicle in first person to relax as you drive back to your stronghold covered in blood.
